BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) — Boise Police say officers had to shoot and kill a dog that had attacked a police K9 during an arrest Tuesday afternoon.
Police say they were responding to a house on the 1600 block of South Annett Street trying to serve a $200,000 arrest warrant on Mitchell Ponting for failure to appear for a narcotics violation.
Officers say they spent 20 minutes knocking on the door asking for Ponting to come outside when two other people opened the door and came out of the house.
Police say the door was left open, and a pit bull weighing approximately 70 pounds ran out of the house and attacked a leashed police K9 named Rosco.
Officers say they were able to push the pit bull away but it came back and attacked Roscoe a second time, biting the K9's throat.
BPD says the K9's handler then fired two shots at the pit bull because it was posing a danger to officers, the K9, and other people at the scene.
The pit bull died at the scene.
Officers say one of the men on the scene, Nickolas Edmonds, ran towards the pit bull after it was shot, but tripped over the police K9, which caused the dog to bite Edmonds.
Police say Edmonds was taken to the hospital and treated, then arrested on a misdemeanor warrant.
Officers say Ponting eventually came out of the house and was also arrested.
BPD says Roscoe, a Blegian Malinois, was bitten three times and was taken to be checked by a veterinarian.
Police say Roscoe's injuries appear to be minor and he is now taking the next few days off resting and recovering under observation at home.
