After coming off a calf injury, Russell Wilson was just happy to get back on the football field regardless of the outcome. However, it appears the expectations from the veteran quarterback were quite high, and when he failed to stand by those, he faced immense criticism and scrutiny for his performance.
During the recent edition of Get Up, ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky not only joined the list of Wilson’s harsh critics, but also proposed another QB for the starting quarterback position of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
After seeing Wilson getting sacked three times in five drives resulting in a 9-3 poor loss, Orlovsky has lost all confidence in him and believes backup Justin Fields would do the job better.
Justin Fields should start for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Two preseason games in and two weeks until the season, I think it's obvious that Justin brings more good than bad in comparison to Russ. ... The Russ that we saw isn't operating this offense, and they're certainly not contenders with the Russ that we saw from this past weekend.Dan Orlovsky said on Get Up
While Wilson logged completing eight of 10 attempts for 47 yards, Fields–who entered the game late in the second quarter–completed 11-of-17 attempts for 92 yards. Although the backup quarterback struggled majorly in the first preseason game, his performance had a drastic difference when evaluated based on the second game.
Mike Tomlin faces tough decision as Russell Wilson struggles in preseason
Head coach Mike Tomlin was sure to take his chances on Wilson as he intends to prioritize experience over other things. However, the level of criticism the veteran is getting for the recent preseason game seems to be making Tomlin’s job much tougher.
Both guys are vying for the role. Russ has pole position because of the collective body of work, the totality of the body of work that he brings into the circumstance. Both guys are new to us. We're getting an opportunity to get to know them through this process.Mike Tomlin said during a previous media availability
The Steelers’ head coach has just one preseason game against the Detroit Lions remaining to evaluate the performances of both Fields and Wilson and come down to a definite decision. They are set to face off against the Atlanta Falcons in the opening week of the 2024 regular season on September 8.
