Early life and education

Stan was raised an only child in Honolulu by his father who was a firefighter, and his mother who was a housewife. He attended a high school in his hometown, and started going with his father to the firefighting department, so after matriculating, he decided not to enroll at college but to become a firefighter as his father.

Career as a firefighter

Stan started working as a firefighter at the age of 20, and held the job for several years before meeting Jim Nabors. He continued working for around two years while he was dating Jim, and eventually quit his job – it’s not known what his other endeavors might have been over the years.

Jim was raised with two older sisters named Annie Ruth and Freddie in Sylacauga, by his father Fred who was a police officer, and his mother Mavis Pearl Newman who was a housewife. Jim sang for his high school and church while he was a teenager.

After matriculating, he enrolled at the University of Alabama where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta International Fraternity, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1952. He then moved to New York City and started working as a typist for the United Nations, before moving to Chattanooga in Tennessee to start his career on TV screens.
